What is the worst thing that can happen on your marvelous, exciting vacation? You run out of money before it’s over. To avoid this you create a travel plan budget. This way you do not end up far away from home with no funds.

Even though no one likes to sit down and crunch numbers, but creating your travel budget is the most important step. It is not as overwhelming as it sounds. Here is what you can do to be travel budget savvy in no time. Create a budget with three parts. The three parts to success are preparation costs, actual vacation costs, and emergency funds.

Preparation Costs

Passports and Visas

If you are traveling out of the country, you will definitely need passports. Depending on which country you travel to, you may need the additional cost of a visa. Check online with immigration and embassies for the rules and regulations for travel to the countries you plan to visit. Research the costs of obtaining passports and visas. Plan for the amount needed for this expense.

Vaccinations

Even though some travel destinations do not need vaccinations but to be sure, check with your board of health or the CDC website. You can find out the recommended vaccines for your travel destination. Check with your Department of Health in your area. Some vaccines may be provided for free. You can also check with your family physician for the cost of vaccinations if not covered by your health insurance. Factor any costs into your travel budget.

Travel Insurance

No one wants to think that he will get sick while on vacation. But illness does not take a vacation and accidents can happen. To be prepared for unexpected expenses for health events, you should purchase travel health insurance. There are many options available. You may even find insurance with your present life or auto insurance provider. Choose one that is most cost effective and will cover you well.

Transportation

After you have your passport, vaccinations, and travel insurance, you need to choose your transportation which includes, airfare, train fare and automobile rentals when you arrive at your destination. Consider the time you have for your vacation and choose the most effective way to travel within your time limits. The next step in your budget planning is the actual cost of your vacation.

Vacation Costs

Lodging Costs

Where will you be sleeping during your vacation? This is one of your major expenses. When planning this part of your budget, be sure to check the rates on different dates and areas near your destination. Costs can vary depending on the time of year and the actual location of your lodging. “Off season” is a cost-effective time to plan your vacations.

Food

Check your lodging to find out if any meals are included with your stay. There is an abundance of information on food review sites about the cost and quality of food on the Internet about any destination. There are menus and critiques of restaurants by customers and travelers to many vacation and local destinations. You can get a general idea of the funds you will need food during your vacation.

Activities and Souvenirs

Make a list of the tours and activities you would like to participate in during your vacation and find out the costs. Add these costs to your budget. Souvenirs can’t be left out of your budget equation. Set aside funds for souvenirs you want to purchase for yourself, friends and family.

Finally, the last step to your budget planning…emergency funds.

Emergency Funds

This is the fund that you set aside just in case of and emergency such as loss of your wallet, purse, credit cards or an unexpected expense. Travel insurance will cover your health events, but the money in this fund covers unfortunate events like theft. You should always have back-up monies to last at least three days more than the length of your vacation stay to cover accommodations, meals and emergency transportation back home.

Planning a vacation on a budget is not fun but careful planning will assure you have a wonderful vacation and no money worries!
