Traveling the world has always been on my bucket list. Pictures of “those far-away places with strange sounding names” as the old song says “keep calling me.” Today it seems to be the trendy thing to do for young and old. Traveling lets you see new places, eat different food, meet people who see life through eyes of a different culture and live in different circumstances. All of these things are great on their own merit, but traveling is good for your well being and good and adds challenges to your mind. It’s just good for you all around. Here are some reasons.

Traveling allows you to learn about other people

When you travel, you find out how people in different countries get up in the mornings, what they may or may not eat for breakfast, their interactions during the day and how they interact with each other. You experience the changes in clothing, language and mannerisms. You discover that many things are different but some things never change. Smiles and nods can still mean in any country, that you will get help with what you don’t understand from a local person.

You can find out how well you cope with new surroundings

Seeing words on signs that you can’t read or hearing strange sounding words that you don’t understand can lead you to panic and feel confused. Making preparations before you travel can help with language barriers. Learning some key phrases that you may need such as how to ask where to go, how much it costs, how to get to the restroom, please and thank you will help. If local people see you are trying to communicate in their language, usually they reward your effort with helping you out. You find out that you can survive and feel accomplished with getting what you need and being understood in a totally different environment. You can cope.

You actually visit historical places you have only read about

Walking over the same ground as St.Paul, the apostle on the Via Appia in Italy was humbling to me when I lived in Italy during our military tour. Actually seeing an Egyptian style bridge on the side of the highway we traveled daily was sobering, knowing how old it was. Going to Mt. Vernon, the home of President George Washington, was also amazing because it is actually a home of the first president of the United States. All these places were what I read about and actually being there was a great way to actually see and feel history. You too as a traveler can experience history.

When you travel, you learn to be flexible and appreciate things you have taken for granted

Traveling to countries that only drink bottled water because they have to or do not have clean drinking water at all, allows you to appreciate your everyday trip to the kitchen faucet to get a drink of water. Having central heat and air conditioning is not common in many countries of the world. Convenient public transportation, ownership of private automobiles and access to health facilities are limited or not as available in many areas of the world. Experiencing a period without these conveniences causes you to appreciate things you take for granted.

On the other hand, there are some countries that may be more advanced in conveniences for daily life and this will give you food for thought on what can be improved in your own country.

Traveling gives you memories that help you create your own history

Traveling creates memories of your own to talk and laugh about. You can reminisce about how difficult it was to buy tickets in Italy to ride a train or ask for directions in Spain back to the main road. You can remember how you thought calamari were onion rings the first time you saw them in that Italian trattoria. You will have fun thinking about how you figured out which door to walk in to get inside a restaurant in Japan even though you could not read a word of Japanese over the entrance. Memories you will have and also the stories to tell for a lifetime.

You get to have an adventure

The final reason traveling is good for your well being is that life will never be “boring.” You have a chance to meet new people, see new things, hear new words, eat new foods. You have a chance to cross cultures and feel closer to your fellow sojourners of life in this world. You get to live life as an adventure.

  3. Traveling does all of the things you have mentioned for the traveller. There are other rewards that I enjoy.  I have enjoyed seeing different architecture from modern to ancient.  I have always admired man kinds ability to build beautiful structures not matter what the tools.  Different parts of the world offer a different view of creation from the deserts to the mountains and beautiful island.  New vistas are breathtaking.  Also, I have found that travel has allowed me to see many of the creatures that I have only read about from the narwhale to the elephant where they live.  Travel is good for every part of our well being.
