Buses leave from just outside and follow the coast road into Gaeta in about 20 minutes for a ticket of roughly 1.10 euros.
As you step off the train at Formia-Gaeta train station with a backpack that suddenly feels heavier than it had in Rome, you feel that familiar mix of excitement and “now what?” The station sits up above Formia, the sea shining down below, and Gaeta is only a few miles away. But those last few miles can make or break the first afternoon of a trip.
Catching the COTRAL Bus Along the Coast Road
The good news is you do not need a taxi or a rental car. Right outside the station the COTRAL buses wait, the ones that roll along the coast road into Gaeta. Twenty minutes, give or take, and a ticket that costs little more than a coffee and you will arrive in Gaeta. You can buy a ticket at the kiosk inside the station. Lesson learned from other Italian arrivals: you get your ticket first, validate it on board, and you are set.
The Ride
The bus stop is almost immediately outside at the Formia Stazione FS. When the bus comes, it is half-empty. Your road drops down through Formia and suddenly the coast opens up. That stretch of road is the real welcome. The route hugs the coast road into Gaeta, passing Formia’s Via Flacca and arriving near the waterfront and historic center. Gaeta’s old town and the mountain begin to take shape ahead.
From Piazza Libertà or Caboto Square it is a short walk to Serapo Beach, the old town, or the split mountain sanctuary. The gulf is on one side, the hills on the other. Get off near Piazza Libertà, a short walk from the waterfront and an even shorter one if you are heading toward Serapo.
By the time you find a gelato, the train already feels like yesterday. The ride is cheap, frequent enough, and it delivers you near Gaeta without any fuss. If you are arriving late in the evening or on a Sunday, the gaps between buses from the station stretch a bit. But most days the COTRAL just works. You step off the train, step onto the bus, and twenty minutes later you are on the coast road sliding into Gaeta like you have been doing it for years.
Taxis are faster but cost far more. Walking the 4.3 miles is possible but not practical with luggage. Check live times in the Moovit app on the day you travel, as frequencies can vary.
